Greetings and Salutations
Thank you for your time, energy and efforts in this co-creation,
of research and development in the understanding and practice (applied research) ,
of (objective) The Martial Sciences.

In the previous Report (topic)
A Comparison (essential differences) of Competition Fighting and Martial Arts:
We Stated That :Essential Differences in Thought
Competition fighting is a game in which the structure of rules & regulations creates a “level playing field” between contestants in order to determine momentary supremacy.
Martial Arts is a survival method that seeks to overcome through strategy.

Competition asks “Who is better?”

Martial Arts asks “How to survive and overcome?”
Self defense?
Martial Arts must have Defense System?

What is Defense?
Having clarified the essential distinction between Martial Arts and competition fighting, we may examine defense.
Understanding of defense begins with an understanding of the technical principle and process of physical contact.

What is the Defense System of Martial Arts ?

What Is Your defense System ?

In this Report (topic)
EOE - Essence of Self-Defense

Present Situation
There are countless styles, schools, and methods of Martial Arts and self-defense, from old-lineage traditional styles and contemporary hybrid systems, to modern combative and conflict resolution methods.

As an expression of the survival instinct, self-defense is basic to the human species.

The subject self-defense intersects a wide array of historical, cultural, social, philosophical, and scientific fields of study.

Even a lifetime of dedicated study could provide a only partial view of practices and beliefs related to self-defense.

EOE: Essence of Self-Defense
Self-defense has two basic components: psychic and physical.

The psychic component addresses all the factors that lead to violence and violent conflict, as well as strategic and tactical thought.

While some aspects of violence are universal, violence is culturally mediated, meaning its expression and conditions are determined by a particular node in space and time.

The focus of EOE is on principle and physical law, which are not bounded by culture.

Physical Self-Defense
Physical self-defense is a response to physical attack. To be attacked sets the “initial conditions” or “zero point” of self-defense.

0) Attacking – To be Attacked – To act with the intent to injure.

Physical attack occurs in one of three forms:

1) Striking – To be Struck – Includes striking with all the various parts of the human body, as well as striking with weapons. Impact weapons can be pointed (spear, spike, bullet), edged (knife, sword), or blunt (club, staff). Projectile weapons such as throwing knives, arrows, and firearms fall into the category of Striking as well.

2) Throwing – To be Thrown – Includes all forms of throwing someone bodily, whether to the ground, to a specific location, or into an object or person.

3) Controlling – To be Controlled – Includes all methods of arrest and manipulation, including joint-locks, holds, and chokes, executed by body or by object (rope, cloth, chain, etc.)

Self-Defense is concerned with prevention of physical attack. Therefore, the Essence of Self-Defense is as follows:
0) DO NOT be Attacked
------------------------------------
1) DO NOT be Struck
2) DO NOT be Thrown
3) DO NOT be Controlled

Evolution of Self-Defense: Martial Arts
Martial Arts entails a continuity of unified offense and defense, developed through specialized training.

What is Martial Arts Defense?

...

What is Defense?

Having clarified the essential distinction between Martial Arts and
competition fighting, we may examine defense. Understanding of defense
begins with an understanding of the technical principle and process of
physical contact.

Essence and Evolution of Contact:

Principle-Point,Line,Cross,Spiral

Present Situation: Martial Arts Defense

The technical catalogues of all the different styles, systems, and
school methods contain infinite examples of technique for coping with
various attacks. Traditional Martial Arts contain a litany of codified
technical applications, formulated to comply with set patterns of
movement. Because its first purpose is the preservation of form, the
practice of technique in Traditional Martial Arts tends toward
formality.

Defense: "Fángyù" ( 防禦 )

The majority of Martial Arts systems in America today have their roots
in Asia; many of the arts of Asia trace their origins to China. The word
for "defense" in Mandarin Chinese is "fángyù," (pronounced "bōgyō" in
Japanese) and is composed of two distinct characters. An examination of
the meaning of these characters will serve to illustrate fundamental
Martial Arts thought:

Fáng - 防 - To prevent/cope

Yù - 禦 - To manage/control
